There are some big names planning to move to the USA to play their football in the Major League Soccer (MLS). These players were former players in the English Premier League. You have the likes of Robbie Fowler, Robert Pires, Markus Hahnemann and Mateja Kezman among others.
These players will definitely make a difference in the MLS. It is expected that the stadia will experience some reasonable increase in the number of spectators. This may however last for only a few weeks as these players had already played out their best days. They may not play for a long time again before they finally “hang their boots”. The MLS should better look for younger players instead of the aging ones. These younger players will make better and lasting impact in the league. Take for instance the case of David Beckham; he was in his early thirties when he joined LA Galaxy. The same goes for Henry when he joined the New York Red Bulls. They both proved their worth. On the contrary, a player like Robert Pires is already 37 and may not make any reasonable impact considering the fact that apart from his age, he was mostly a “bench warmer” in Aston Villa before his release.
Players in their early twenties are what the MLS will need to improve their playing standard. If they need players with Premiership experience to improve their league, then, they do not have any other choice other than young skillful players.
Here are the current Players in the MLS with English Premier League experience. The number of Premier League Appearances is there in brackets:
Didier Domi - New England Revolution (67)
Landon Donovan - LA Galaxy (10)
Terry Dunfield - Vancouver (1)
Juan Pablo Angel - LA Galaxy (175)
David Beckham - LA Galaxy (265)
Jay De Merit - Vancouver Whitecaps (32)
Carl Robinson - NY Red Bulls (6)
Teemo Tainio - NY Red Bulls (88)
